I started with a foundation of shame. Which meant I had no security in my life. When you live with shame, you can’t ever feel true security. Shame robs you of your security. This will tend to create fear. This lays the foundation and is the root cause of panic attacks.
2. Stuffing Down Your Fears
I came to understand early in life that you’re not to supposed to reveal that you’re scared. We’re taught to not feel fear. Be a brave little boy or girl. I was conditioned to stuff down my fears. “Don’t be afraid”.
But I am scared! I’m so small and the world is so big. Events that grown-ups can slough off seem overwhelming to me. I’m too young to know what’s going on. I don’t know how things work. There’s too much I don’t know. And so the fear keeps on growing.
Childhood often is frightening, but I don’t want to feel the fear! Therefore, I push as much fear as I can away from me and into my shadow. Unfortunately, sooner or later I’m going to have to deal with that fear.
I can either travel down into my shadow directly and deal with it there, or else it will come at me in the world.
I can repress the fear for only so long. Sooner or later, that fear will rise up. I’ll find myself in situations that terrify me. Or maybe the fear will just come out of nowhere.
And all the while, the shadow is just doing its job. It holds onto all the stuff I don’t want to deal with. It keeps all the power and emotion safe for me, and then gives it all back to me later in life. Of course, it seems like a land mine when it happens.
So this stands as the second reason that contributes to panic attacks; as the fear that we stuff down into the shadow now becomes conscious.
3. Making Up Fear Stories
Fear stories stand as an attempt to describe the fear. Rather than just feeling our fears and releasing them, instead we become trapped by rationalizing those fears.
The fear stories are all the logical and rational reasons why I really should be afraid. “Don’t you get what’s going on here? It absolutely is not just in my imagination. I must be scared – because I really might have that terrible illness.”
