Headaches are a common problem that many people face almost every day. Headaches can be caused by a wide range of things ranging from restricted blood flow to stress to serious medical conditions. The good news is that most headaches are simply tension headaches and they are not serious. Herbal remedies can be very effective at curing these.
You can find herbal remedies for headaches from almost every medical philosophy including Chinese herbal medicine, Ayurveda medicine (the traditional medicine in India), and traditional herbal and homeopathic medicine.
Ginger is a common herbal medicine used in Chinese medicine and is recommended to treat headaches. You can brew a ginger tea or eat a small piece of fresh ginger. Ginger is now available at many health food stores and even in a lot of normal grocery stores.
If you want to try Ayurveda herbal remedies for headaches, there are two commonly used treatments. The first uses warm mustard oil on a cloth. You apply this compress to your forehead to relieve pain. Another way to treat headaches is to add boiling water to some coriander seeds. You then inhale this coriander seed steam. Enhaling the steam can be helpful getting rid of sinus headache pain.
Drinking warm tea is another common herbal remedy for headaches. Tea can be made from rose hip, chamomile, or peppermint. Tension headaches can often be relaxed away with a nice cup of tea. Valerian root is another remedy that can be taken as a tea or as a capsule. Be careful when you use valerian root though because it may make you very drowsy.
Aromatherapy offers several remedies for getting rid of headaches which can be very pleasant to use. Lavender oil is the first remedy. You can rub it into your temples (or have somebody else do it for you) or put a couple drops at the base of your nose. The relaxing effect of lavender can relax away your tension headache. Another aromatic remedy is to take a hot bath using relaxing scents like lavender or chamomile. These remedies can be part of your everyday relaxation routine even if you don’t have a headache.
