What do you do about the grief that just doesn’t seem to ever end?

First, let me mention that of course it takes some time for healing. It won’t happen overnight, especially when tragedy strikes. However when the grief just seems to go on and on and you can’t move past this grief stage, then it’s time to view it a little deeper.

Emotions are meant to keep moving. You aren’t supposed to experience the same feelings over and over and over again. That’s called ‘being stuck’. It seems many people are stuck in one way or another. I know I was. While it could be shame, anger, or fear, for this article, let’s focus on dealing with the grief that will not end.

Within you there exists a pathway of emotion. You have a stream of thoughts, and you’ve got a stream of feelings. They’re always on and always flowing. They’re actually flowing in the exact same pathway. In a healthy situation, I would be feeling new feelings continuously. Like a smorgasbord of feelings.

Regardless of how healthy you are emotionally, there’s gonna be a symphony – a range – of various feelings. To always feel the same exact feeling whenever something triggers my memories of some past event would get somewhat boring, to say the least. So what’s up here? Why all the grief? Why would I have the same feelings over and over again?

If we keep using the ‘stream’ analogy, a boulder sits in the stream. If you don’t remove this boulder the grief just continues.

And the boulder can be eliminated! This is your life, and your stream, and your boulder. You’ve got to really let this in.

There’s nothing intractable unless I believe it to be. Understand? Whatever you believe about getting rid of this boulder is probably true.

Changing a belief is easy. The hard part, the reason why people cling to beliefs so strongly, even when it kills them, is because they don’t want to feel and release the energy that’s surrounding this belief.

So what’s in your boulder? It’s a mixture of beliefs and attitudes, feelings and thoughts, and choices and decisions. Maybe some other energies as well. Whatever’s there, it’s your contribution. Which is good news!

And it’s also the important first step to dealing with grief. I’ve got to own what I’m doing to myself. You need to let it into your mind and into your heart. “I created this.”

And don’t use this as an excuse to blame or shame yourself! That’s not what ownership is. And not as a way to feel sorry for yourself or judge yourself. You need to take this beyond the pity stage if you want to be dealing with grief. Also the shame, blame and judgment stage. One good way to do this is to literally give yourself several minutes to just feel sorry for yourself that you have this boulder. And then stop the pity!

And then give yourself five good minutes to blame yourself, then drop the blame! Or feel whatever may be standing in the way of you and your ownership.

Allow five minutes to feel it – unabashedly. Don’t inhibit yourself – go for the full effect. Feel all the pity or judgment or what might be there. You might want to even set a timer. But when the time is up, you need to let it go.

It takes ownership to change. But you can’t own it if you’re trying to pick it up with gloves of pity or blame or some other limiter.

So that’s step one. If you make it past these limiters then it’s all downhill from here.

Remember, once you own it, you can give it up. Then you’re dealing with grief. And for the rest of the story, just go to this site on emotional healing.
