Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is quite common and leads to lots of dental issues. It is caused by many things both mental and physical and there are lots of treatments out there. It is far easier to deal with teeth grinding when you know why exactly you’re doing it so in this article we’ll look at some of the more common causes for the condition so you’ll know why you developed the habit in the first place.

Specific everyday rituals could possibly play a part in teeth grinding. These include eating more than the recommended amount of sugar and caffeine, consuming alcohol and smoking.

Certainly, none of these problems are healthy in general, particularly when done too much, however they can purposely play a role in teeth grinding. If you typically grind your teeth in your sleep, you shouldn’t consume very many stimulants right before bedtime. Junk foods, like pop, which generally have sugar and caffeine in them, can cause teeth grinding both when you are awake or asleep. An unpolluted diet and one with a smaller consumption of stimulants can aid in the minimization of this issue. Sometimes (though this is uncommon) teeth grinding is induced by diseases that affect your central nervous system. People with Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease, both diseasing affecting the nervous system, commonly grind their teeth during the day or while sleeping. This is similar to the muscle tremors that people with these illnesses have. Still, for the most part, this very common habit is induced by stress or other dental problems. Of course, if you have other symptoms that you can’t explain or if these kinds of diseases run in your family, you will want to ask your doctor to check you out. If they don’t and you aren’t, it’s more likely that you are grinding your teeth because of dental problems or emotional issues.

Once in a while teeth grinding can be caused by worms like pinworms and intestinal parasites. It is true that this is most common in countries where there is a lack of good drinking water, but that doesn’t mean it cannot happen in well developed countries too. In fact, some alternative healthcare experts say that parasites like worms are a lot more prevalent than is commonly believed and that this can cause lots of problems, not just teeth grinding. There are plenty of tests that can be done to tell you whether or not this is the cause of your teeth grinding and if you know someone who has this problem (especially if you are their relative) you should get the tests done on yourself as well. These pests can cause lots and lots of problems but they are easy enough to identify and then flush out of your system.

Many dental and gum problems are caused by teeth grinding and it does weaken your teeth. While grinding your teeth for a few minutes may not be serious, doing it for many years can end up costing you a lot of money and discomfort. This article has explored a few of the common causes of teeth grinding but whatever the cause of your condition it is important that you cure it so that you don’t develop long term health problems from it.
